BAR HARBOR — The second public forum on safety and security in the Mount Desert Island Regional School System will be held in the band room at MDI High School on Thursday, May 10, at 6 p.m.
About 150 people attended the first forum, on March 6, which was prompted by the mass shooting three weeks earlier at a high school in Parkland, Fla.
The choice of the band room as the location for the May 10 forum is significant. At the first forum, several MDI High School students said they felt less safe at school than they used to and that they felt particularly vulnerable in the band room.
“We need to figure out something to do with that room immediately,” said Mackenzie Miller, a senior.
Her mother, Tracy, complained at the April 9 meeting of the school system board that “little to nothing” had been done to make the band room more secure.
“I understand the level of frustration, that it appears nothing is being done,” said MDI High School Principal Matt Haney. But he said that wasn’t the case.
“We are evaluating all of our weak points, and instead of addressing them in a haphazard way, we’re looking at them as a whole. We want to make sure that when we do something, we do it the right way.”
