Scientist, sailor, Peter Sellers dies at 84



IMG_2501.JPGMOUNT DESERT — Pioneering scientist, intrepid sailor and boat builder, and long-time contributor to charitable causes on Mount Desert Island died at home in Philadelphia on Nov. 22, of cancer. He was 84.

Sellers, who was on the faculty of Rockefeller University, was a trustee of College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor and served on the board of the Nicholas Newlin Foundation. He and his wife of nearly 60 years, Lucy Bell Sellers, a former professor at COA, were supporters of numerous philanthropic causes on MDI including the Island Housing Trust.

As a senior research scientist at the university, Sellers developed mathematical models to aid in computer matching of DNA samples. His work also led to important discoveries in the field of chemistry.

On the 25th anniversary of his wedding to Lucy, Sellers launched a 38-foot Friendship Sloop, the Lucy Bell, he had built himself at his Pennsylvania home. The couple spent at least a month each summer sailing off the Maine coast.

A memorial service is set for Saturday, Dec. 6, at 1 p.m. at St. David’s Episcopal Church in Wayne PA. Burial will be private.

Locally, gifts in his memory can be made to the College of the Atlantic.
