BAR HARBOR — From secretaries to ed techs and cooks to custodians, support staff in the Mount Desert Island Regional School System are getting a 3.22 percent raise for 2018-2019.
School principals and central office administrators will get the same pay increase.
The MDIRSS board approved the new pay scales last week.
They do not apply to any teachers in the school system or to the support staff at Conners Emerson School in Bar Harbor. Contracts with those groups are in negotiations.
The MDIRSS board also voted to switch all administrators and support staff, except for those at Conners Emerson, to a different Blue Cross/Blue Shield health insurance plan. The deductible will increase from $200 to $1,000, but the school system will create a health reimbursement account to cover the $800 difference.
“There is no impact to the employee with that shift,” said MDIRSS Superintendent Marc Gousse.
Some co-payments will increase, but he estimated most employees will come out ahead financially with the combination of the pay increase and insurance change.
“The plan is going to cost the school district and the employee less money in nearly every instance.”
As for negotiations over a new contract for MDIRSS teachers, representatives of the school board and the teachers’ union plan to meet with a professional mediator within the next few weeks.
