Road paving bid awarded

MOUNT DESERT — A bid of $322,924 has won Pike Industries of Fairfield the contract for paving sections of five roads here this year.

The roads scheduled for resurfacing or reconstruction are Huntington Road and Maple Lane (South) in Northeast Harbor, Upland and Jordan Pond roads in Seal Harbor and Beech Hill Road in Somesville. The total length of the paving projects is 2.74 miles.

Pike Industries’ bid was about $36,000 lower than the bids submitted by the two other bidders and $97,076 below the town’s paving budget for fiscal year 2017.

Public Works Director Tony Smith explained that the budget originally was to have covered work on three additional roads, but those projects were put on hold because he wasn’t sure there would be enough money.

Now that Pike Industries’ bid has come in so far under budget, Smith told the Board of Selectmen Monday night that the town probably can afford to add Neighborhood Road in Northeast Harbor and a portion of Steamboat Wharf Road in Seal Harbor to the paving contract. The selectmen authorized him to use his discretion in adding those or other projects to this year’s paving schedule.

Smith said he hopes all of the work can be done this fall.
