BAR HARBOR — Tim Rich, owner of the Independent Café on Main Street in Bar Harbor, may drop out of the congressional race, according to a report last week in the Lewiston Sun Journal.
Rich claims that the Maine Democratic Party has rallied around state Rep. Jared Golden, of Lewiston, instead of remaining neutral. He also said press coverage has favored Golden.
Golden and party officials disagree with the Rich’s assessment. Local party committees in Lewiston and Androscoggin County, where Golden resides, have reportedly already endorsed Golden.
Rich has the lowest amount of cash on hand of the five Democratic candidates, currently about $10,000, according to Federal Elections Commission records. Rich raised about $72,000, while Golden has raised more than $346,000.
Rich told the Sun Journal that this will not be his last run for public office. Requests for comment to the Rich campaign were not returned by press time.
