MOUNT DESERT — The Foster’s On the Run convenience store in Somesville will be closed for extensive renovations for about seven weeks starting next Monday, March 26.
The impetus for the makeover was the need to dig up and replace the tanks that feed the store’s gasoline pumps, according to Assistant Manager Mark Martin.
“The tanks have been in the ground for 30 years, which apparently is their life expectancy,” he said.
Renovation of the store’s interior will include cutting back on grocery shelves and adding space for adult beverages.
“We’re going to go with the things we sell quite a bit of,” Martin said. “We’ll have a wall of liquor and wines and the largest beer cooler in the [Foster’s] chain.”
The Somesville store is the largest of the 20 On the Run stores in Maine.
“It’s the third largest in sales over the course of a year and No. 1 by far during the summer months,” Martin said.
That makes it especially important that the renovations be done as soon as possible, he said.
“They’re trying their dangedest to have it all completed by mid-May so we can be back up and going and cooking like Crisco for the summer.”
Foster’s leases the Somesville property from A.C. Fernald Sons Inc.
