Program provides produce to seniors

ELLSWORTH — The Maine Senior Farm Share 2017 program, which provides income-eligible Maine seniors 60 years of age or older $50 worth of fresh, locally grown produce weekly over an eight-week period during the harvest season, is accepting signups.

Some farmers deliver produce directly to seniors’ homes, whereas others let participants select the produce they want right at the farm stand.

To enroll in Senior Farm Share, seniors must contact a participating farmer directly in early spring. Shares are limited, and interested seniors are encouraged to sign up early. Contact information for participating farmers, income eligibility guidelines and additional information about the Senior Farm Share program can be found at the Maine Department of Agriculture’s website or by contacting the Area Agency on Aging at 1-877-353-3771.
