Oyster hearing

AUGUSTA — The Department of Marine Resources has set a public hearing to consider the application of Bar Harbor Oyster Co. LLC for a 24.5-acre, 10-year, aquaculture lease located east of Israel Point and west of Thomas Island in Mount Desert Narrows, for suspended culture of American and European oysters. The hearing is set for July 28, at 6 p.m. at the Bar Harbor Town Hall, 23 Cottage St.

“This hearing is an opportunity for the department to take evidence from the applicant and members of the public on this application,” hearing officer Diantha C. Robinson said.

Any person may attend the hearing to ask questions of the parties and give testimony explaining his or her position on the issues.

The DMR evaluates several criteria for the granting of leases, including the effect of the proposed lease upon riparian owners’ shore access, navigation, fishing and other uses of the area, and ecologically significant plants and animals.

Copies of the application and the department’s site report are available on the DMR website. Follow links for pending lease applications.
