BAR HARBOR — One of Mount Desert Island’s most distinctive residential properties will be sold at auction later this month. Starcrest is guaranteed to sell for $2.9 million or above, according to a release by Sheldon Good and Company, which is running the auction.
Swan Agency Sotheby’s International Realty of Bar Harbor is the real estate agency that holds the listing and is handling the sale for the home’s owner.
Located on Strawberry Hill, overlooking Frenchman Bay and Acadia National Park, the 10,000-square-foot house was designed by architect James Walter Schildroth for the Starbird family. The living spaces, which are described as an origami-inspired exterior with a nature-inspired interior, are spread across four interconnecting levels. The jutting angles of the exterior are said by some to resemble the bow of a clipper ship, while others think it appears to be a futuristic space ship.
Inside are five en-suite bedrooms, five and half baths, an elevator and a natural stone fireplace. There are views for 360 degrees, and the home features five exterior decks from which the nearby Kebo Valley Golf Course, as well as peaks in Acadia, including Cadillac, Dorr and Champlain mountains, can be seen.
Sheldon Good & Co. will hold open houses on consecutive Saturdays, Aug. 13 and 20, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The home has been listed for sale for more than a year. The auction, which has become a more and more popular sales method for high-end homes, is set for Tuesday, Aug. 23.
