Noted oceanographer joins National Park science push



BAR HARBOR — Noted oceanographer Sylvia Earle is set to speak at the Bar Harbor Club on Friday, July 15, at a Schoodic Institute event celebrating the new “Second Century Stewardship” science partnership between the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), Schoodic Institute at Acadia National Park, the National Park Service and other institutions. The event opens with a reception at 5 p.m.

Earle has been chief scientist at the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, an Explorer in Residence with National Geographic and head of ocean engineering firms.

The celebration will include an announcement and introduction of the first Second Century Stewardship Research Fellow, a conversation between David Shaw and Sylvia Earle, and selected segments of David Shaw’s new film, “Second Century Stewardship: Science beyond the Scenery in Acadia National Park.”
