New trustees at Family Center

SOUTHWEST HARBOR — Colleen Maynard and Vivek Kumar have joined the Acadia Family Center board of trustees.

AFC board President Sam Hamill said, “Each of our two new board members will make a distinct and important contribution to our mission. … We are proud to welcome them among our other outstanding trustees.”

Maynard, regional relationship manager with Bar Harbor Bank & Trust, has been with the bank since 2001. She is a graduate of Mount Desert Island High School and earned her bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Southern Maine in Portland.

A resident of Southwest Harbor, Maynard volunteers for numerous community organizations. In her spare time, she enjoys hiking and biking in Acadia National Park, playing competitive tennis through the USTA and taking in all the natural beauty Mount Desert Island has to offer.

“I am hopeful that I can help the organization to grow and service more of our community members and their various needs. The center employs some truly wonderful local people that sincerely want the best for all of us,” Maynard said.

Kumar is on the faculty at the Jackson Laboratory and studies the genetics of addiction using mouse models. He has a doctorate from the University of California, San Diego, and conducted postdoctoral research at Northwestern University and UT Southwestern. His work uses unbiased genetic approaches to discover new genes and pathways that regulate addiction. He also is interested in communicating science to the lay public and has been an advocate for better medically managed long-term treatment of addiction and recognition that addiction is a disease like other chronic diseases.

“AFC is an integral community resource for the area, and I’m thrilled to be part of this important organization.”

Vivek lives with his wife and daughter in Bar Harbor.
