New program supports children’s healthy habits

ELLSWORTH — Healthy Acadia will provide “Let’s Go! 5-2-1-0” programming and resources to communities in Hancock and Washington counties.

The program was developed in 2006 by the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital at Maine Medical Center and implemented in partnership with MaineHealth. It helps to establish healthy habits beginning in childhood by encouraging children to eat five or more servings of fruit and vegetables, to spend two or more hours engaged in physical activity, to spend one hour or less of recreational screen time and to consume zero sugar-sweetened beverages.

Program partners include Blue Hill Memorial Hospital, Down East Community Hospital, Maine Coast Memorial Hospital and Mount Desert Island Hospital.

Healthy Acadia staff will work with childcare facilities, school and out-of-school programs throughout Hancock and Washington counties to implement the program, which provides participating sites with toolkits, online resources and technical assistance to help guide them in successfully supporting increased physical activity and healthy eating for children and youths.
