New MDI history museum opens on Internet

You don’t even have to leave home to visit the newest Mount Desert Island history museum. It’s as close as the “cloud.”

“Mount Desert Island: Shaped by Nature” is the online museum at the website that has been created by island organizations and individuals taking part in the MDI Community Heritage Project. The project was undertaken last year with a $2,872 grant from the Maine Memory Network of the Maine Historical Society.

One example is the exhibit titled “Basketball: From Rivals to Teammates.” Tim Garrity, executive director of the MDI Historical Society, said that exhibit can serve as a metaphor for the breaking down over the generations of the sometimes rigid divisions among the communities on the island.

Another exhibit in the online museum that uses a narrow lens to tell a broader story is “The Savage Family of Mount Desert.”

In addition to the MDI Historical Society and the Northeast Harbor Library, the island organizations that have contributed information or material for the online museum so far include the Abbe Museum, College of the Atlantic, MDI High School, Acadia National Park and Great Harbor Maritime Museum.
