BAR HARBOR — Mount Desert Island Hospital recently welcomed two new doctors to its staff. Dr. Nathan Donaldson, D.O., MHA, FACEP, is the new medical director of the hospital’s emergency department. Dr. Kaustubh Shrivastava, M.D., has joined the MDI Hospital team as a hospitalist.

Donaldson assumes the role of emergency department medical director from former medical director J.R. Krevans Jr., M.D., who will be transitioning into a hospitalist role. As the new director, Donaldson hopes to “keep up the high standards that J.R. has set and continue to work together toward constant improvement.”

Mount Desert Island and the hospital appealed to Donaldson right away. “I enjoyed the hospital’s sense of community and the sense of community throughout the island, and I wanted to be a part of that,” he said. He also noticed that the MDI Hospital staff has a habit of sticking around. “Coming from the tenth largest city in the country, that’s a nice change,” he said. Donaldson has a background in both sports and emergency medicine.

During his 5-year fellowship in sports medicine in San Jose, Donaldson worked as a physician for the San Jose Sharks and the San Francisco 49rs. “I’m also an avid Northeast sports fan,” he said. Donaldson attended medical school at the University of New England College Of Osteopathic Medicine in Biddeford, completing his residency at Brown University School of Medicine in Providence, R.I. He has always had an interest in emergency medicine. “I was drawn to it in med school right away,” he said. “You have to know a little bit about everything and it’s a challenge. It’s constantly changing, and you have to keep up.”

As a medical director, Donaldson is very team focused. “My goal is to work together to take care of the community,” he said. He enjoys teaching and comes from a background in teaching hospitals. Although MDI Hospital is not a teaching hospital, its unique partnership with the University of Pennsylvania and strong emphasis on continued improvement and quality make it a great fit, he said.

Shrivastava said of his role as a hospitalist, that a hospitalist is “a doctor who works in the hospital setting and takes care of patients while they are admitted to the hospital.” Hospitalists’ primary professional focus is the general medical care of hospitalized patients. Their activities include patient care, teaching, research and leadership related to hospital medicine. MDI Hospital’s Hospitalist program is led by Hospitalist Medical Director Mark Brown, M.D. Shrivastava enjoys his work as a hospitalist because of the “dynamic work environment, challenging diagnoses, and ability to connect with people.”

Shrivastava and his wife moved to Mount Desert Island from Sylvania, Ohio. Shrivastava recently completed his internal medicine residency at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo, Ohio. He received his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from Topiwala National Medical College, Mumbai, India. In his free time, Shrivastava enjoys walks, hikes, going to the gym, sports, swimming, reading and travelling. He was drawn to Mount Desert Island because of its beautiful location and nice community, he said. “I look forward to being a part of the MDI Hospital team and getting to know the community better.”
