Murray named library director

TREMONT — Lisa Taplin Murray has been appointed as the new director of the Bass Harbor Memorial Library. Board Chairman Pete Madeira made the announcement on Monday.

“We are extremely fortunate to have someone of Lisa’s experience with libraries in general but most especially her understanding and connections with the other MDI libraries and libraries throughout Hancock County,” said Madeira.

Murray, a resident of Tremont, has worked as library assistant at the Southwest Harbor Public Library since 2006. In her role there, she was responsible for assisting patrons, maintaining the library’s donor database and training and working with volunteers.

Additionally, Murray was one of a three-member team of librarians at the Pemetic Elementary School helping students and organizing the school’s collection.

The new director will be responsible for all aspects of the library’s operation, including managing the downloadable book service and working with the Tremont Elementary School. The aim is to ensure that students have a welcome home in the library and that the library’s services complement the school’s academic programs.

The Bass Harbor Memorial Library was founded in 1900 and moved into the present building in 1922. Operating year-round on a four-day-a-week schedule, the original building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
