Midnight madness set

BAR HARBOR — Santa Claus is coming to town on Friday, Dec. 7 for the Village Holidays and Midnight Madness Sale.

The event begins at 4:30 p.m. at the Village Green, where guests can help themselves to free hot cocoa and cookies, while carolers sing.

At 5 p.m., Santa makes his special appearance, arriving by fire truck to light the town Christmas tree, and read “’Twas the Night Before Christmas.”

With a wink of his eye and a twist of his head, he’ll then make his way to the YMCA, where he’ll listen to children’s wish lists and be available for photos.

Also at the YMCA, youngsters can enjoy craft activities and pick out a free book as part of the Islander’s Gift of Reading program.

The sales, 20 to 70 percent discounts, begin at 8 p.m. at many downtown businesses. The event is sponsored by the Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce, the Bar Harbor Merchants Association, and Acadia Shops. It has been held annually since 2001.

Those who shop at participating businesses can turn receipts from purchases in at the chamber’s visitors center at the corner of Cottage Street and Main Street. Each receipt turned in throughout the night is worth one entry into the drawing for two round-trip tickets on Cape Air from Bar Harbor Airport to Boston. A winner will be drawn on Dec. 8.

Check visitbarharbor.com for a complete list of participating retailers. See more information on page 7.
