BAR HARBOR — Julie Meltzer, director of curriculum, assessment and instruction for the Mount Desert Island Regional School System, has been named 2019 Curriculum Leader of the Year by the Maine Curriculum Leaders Association (MCLA).

“Julie is a huge advocate for equity in the learning and development of all students and staff,” MCLA Executive Director Heidi McGinley said in announcing the award. “Her leadership enabled the [MDI] district to implement standards-based learning approaches that meet students where they are in each school.

“[The district] is fortunate to have a leader who leads by example, loves learning and truly values the voices and contributions of all stakeholders.”

Superintendent Marc Gousse nominated Meltzer for the award.

“Julie is a phenomenal educator and powerful advocate for students and staff,” he said. “She is respected statewide and nationally and truly defines all this award embodies.”

Meltzer has worked for the MDI school system since 2013. She is immediate past president of the MCLA.
