MDI YMCA names new director

BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island YMCA announced Monday it had hired Thomas Parham of North Tazewell, Va., as its new executive director.

Parham has more than 30 years of experience with YMCAs and has served as the executive director for two YMCAs, one in Virginia and one in South Carolina.

“I look forward to working with the board and staff to ensure that we are responding to the needs of the MDI community,” Parham said. “It is important for us to provide high quality programs. I also look forward to getting to know our members and listening to them.”

He also looks forward to working with other nonprofit organizations on MDI and with the business community, he said.

Parham was chosen for this position from a pool of over 35 candidates from all over the country. He was selected by the board of directors of the MDI YMCA upon the unanimous recommendation of the search committee chaired by Steve Richards and the following MDI YMCA board members: Bob Rechholtz, board chair, Scott Henggeler, Catherine Lutz and Dave Woodside. Support for the search also was provided from the YMCA of the USA.

Parham has a bachelor’s degree in behavioral science from Shorter College.

He is currently the executive director of the Four Seasons YMCA in Tazewell, Va. He led the start-up of the YMCA, which was chartered in 2009. During his tenure, the Four Seasons Y grew from one location to two locations through collaboration with Southwest Community College.

Before Four Seasons, Parham served as the executive director of the YMCA of Beaufort, S.C., from 1993 to 2007. He collaborated with schools and churches to provide after school childcare.

He also started the Beaufort County Physical Activity Coalition, which included three hospitals, the County Recreation Department and other organizations. He also served as the chair of the first YMCAs of South Carolina public policy committee.

Parham will begin work on June 13. Interim Executive Director Bob Oickle will work with Parham, the board and staff to ensure a smooth transition.
