MDI teens eligible for adventure trip

BAR HARBOR — One lucky Mount Desert Island-area teenager will be going on an adventure.

The Jesup Memorial Library in Bar Harbor has teamed with the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) to provide one teen, age 13 to 16, with a free, five-day Backcountry Wilderness Intro Adventure with the AMC from June 29 to July 3.

To be eligible, teens must live on MDI, the Cranberry Isles, Swan’s Island, Frenchboro, or in Trenton or Lamoine. They also must attend a Mount Desert Island Regional School System school or be homeschooled in the area.

Applicants need to be Jesup Memorial Library cardholders. Cards are free and can be acquired at any time.

To apply, teens should let the Jesup know why they want to go on the trip. The application can take any form — essay, poster, video, collage, song or other medium.

A panel including Acadia National Park Ranger Betty Lyle and Earl Brechlin of the Mount Desert Islander will choose a winner and two alternates in case the first person is unable to attend for some reason.

Much of the gear necessary for the trip is provided by the AMC, and local retailers are providing gift certificates to help furnish any other gear or clothing needed. The winner is responsible for providing transportation to New Hampshire for the start of the trip.

Applications are due at the library by 5 p.m. on May 17. A winner will be announced May 23.

Pick up an application at the Jesup circulation desk. For more information, call the Jesup at 288-4245.
