MOUNT DESERT — The Mount Desert Island Historical Society has digitized and uploaded its catalog of 13,800 documents, photographs, texts and objects to its website, mdihistory.pastperfectonline.com. The collection is now searchable, allowing the public free and unrestricted access to the history of Mount Desert Island.

For years, volunteers at the Mount Desert Island Historical Society have been working to get the vast collection ready to be posted online. This dedicated group of trained individuals worked under the guidance of Ann Benson, the Historical Society’s volunteer Curator. Benson contributed countless hours coordinating volunteers and curating the collection. Through her guidance, the items in the collections have been researched, verified and cataloged in accordance with national best practice standards.

The catalog was incorporated into a webpage designed by 2015 Visiting History Scholar Bethany Warnock of the University of Maine, who was supported by a grant from the University of Maine Humanities Center.

Objects, books, manuscripts, historic photographs and documents of the island’s people and places are all part of the collection at the Mount Desert Island Historical Society. Researchers, scholar, and the general public are welcome to browse the catalog. Requests can be made to review the items in person at the Sound School House, located at 373 Sound Drive in Mount Desert.
