HAMPDEN — The Conners Emerson Math Team placed first in the Eastern Maine “Chapter Competition” Saturday at Reeds Brook Middle School.

Nine students attended the competition with coaches Sarah Winne and Joel Graber. Also competing were 67 other students from 14 different schools.

Conners Emerson eighth graders Lillian Swan, Evan Ankrom, Carlina Leonardi, and Rex DeMuro, placed first in the team round.

After the written competitions, the top ten individual finishers went into a “countdown round,” in which two contestants at a time face off to solve problems with pencil and paper.

DeMuro placed second in the individual competition, Swan was fourth, Leonardi was fifth and Ankrom was eighth. All four earned spots in the state competition, along with sixth grader Zoey Ray, who also placed in the top 20.

The state competition is set for Saturday, March 9 at Kennebec Valley Community College in Fairfield.
