Manager search explored

TREMONT — Selectmen last week decided to get proposals from two firms for conducting a search for a permanent town manager.

The board previously contacted the Maine Municipal Association about the search. However, the association, which provides professional services to municipalities in the state, has said it currently is too busy to help Tremont with its search, according to interim Town Manager Dana Reed.

Reed has been interim manager since June. Chairman Kathi Thurston has said that selectmen would prefer to keep Reed on, but news reports of his being a candidate for other jobs prompted the call for a search.

Reed was one of seven candidates for the position of city manager in Sedona, Ariz., and was in that city with the other candidates last week for several days of interviews. According to a March 6 report in the Sedona Red Rock News, the job has been offered to the city manager of Delta, Colo., Justin Clifton. Whether Clifton accepted the position was not known by press time.

Reed was town manager of Bar Harbor from 1986 until the spring of 2014.

In other business last week, selectmen appointed Linda Graham to the warrant committee. The committee has been unable to meet due to a lack of a quorum, Reed said.

Four members present constitute a quorum on the seven-member committee. Before Graham was appointed, the committee had four members. The problem was that one of those members, Jim Geary, is out of town for an extended period and has not been able to attend meetings, Reed said.

Typically, the warrant committee meets in conjunction with selectmen during the process of preparing a budget to present to voters at the annual town meeting in May. This year, it appears that selectmen will finish the process without that input and then pass the budget along to the warrant committee for comments, Reed said.

Selectmen and Reed have been working on the budget, but nothing has been finalized. Reed said he expects they will be “a lot closer” to completing the process at the March 16 selectmen’s meeting.
