BAR HARBOR — Chadbourne Smith, Bar Harbor town meeting moderator for 40 years, was honored at town meeting Tuesday with a gift and the reading of a resolution in his honor passed by the Town Council.

For 63 years, the Smith family has held the reins of Bar Harbor’s annual town meeting. Chad’s father, Judge Edwin R. Smith, moderated the meeting for 23 years beginning in 1952.

“Chad will be long remembered for his quiet demeanor, his thoughtful approach and his diplomatic manner, which together enabled him to calmly guide voters through the most contentious issues,” the resolution reads.

In accepting the honor Tuesday, Smith entertained the crowd with a spot-on impression of the late Tinker Bunker and a story from town meetings past.
