Lab cited for creativity

BAR HARBOR — Jackson Laboratory officials are the co-recipients of the 2014 Maine Creative Industries Award, a biennial honor meant to recognize exceptional people and organizations who enrich Maine’s growing reputation as a state where the arts and enterprise meet and flourish.

Jax CEO and President Edison Liu will receive the award at a gala celebration held by the Maine Center for Creativity (MCC) in Portland in November along with co-recipient Patrick Dempsey. Dempsey, a Maine native, founded the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope and Healing in Lewiston. He is best known for his role as Dr. Derek Shepherd on the long-running TV drama Grey’s Anatomy.

Both the lab and Dempsey showcase Maine’s creativity in different ways, said Jean Maginnis, the founder and director of MCC. Dempsey as a product of the state’s rich performing arts community and the lab as an example of a world-class research and development industry.
