BAR HARBOR — The Abbe Museum received an excellence in marketing award from the DownEast Acadia Tourism Association (DART) last week for its new Abbe Museum Indian Market. DART recognized the market as an important event for the region’s tourism and creative economies.
“We are honored to receive this award and are grateful to the many individuals and organizations that supported our inaugural market this year,” said Stefanie Joy Muscat, the museum’s advancement director, who accepted the award on the Abbe’s behalf. “We look forward to working with DART, and all our tourism partners, to truly make the Abbe Museum Indian Market a regional tourism anchor.”
The museum held its first market in May of this year exceeded expectations, with about 50 native basket makers, pottery makers, jewelry makers, wood carvers, painters and other artists and craftspeople from around the country participating in the juried art show. The festival also included a native fashion show, film festival and live performances.
Planning is already well underway for next year’s market. It will be held May 17-19, 2019 in downtown Bar Harbor.
DART is a partnership between area chambers of commerce and tourism organizations. The group hosted a tourism symposium and awards luncheon Nov. 8 in Machias.
The mission of the Abbe Museum, Maine’s first and only Smithsonian Affiliate is to inspire new learning about the Wabanaki Nations with every visit. With two locations – in downtown Bar Harbor and inside Acadia National Park at Sieur de Monts Spring – the Abbe works closely with the Wabanaki people to share their stories, history, and culture with a broader audience. The museum has a collection of more than 70,000 archaeological, historic, and contemporary objects, and its collections conservation program is recognized nationally as a model for museums. The Abbe also holds the world’s largest and best-documented collection of Maine Native American basketry.
