Housing change vote postponed

BAR HARBOR — Councilors pulled a proposed zoning change to encourage housing development from the June warrant last week, asking the Planning Board to address concerns about new units becoming short-term vacation rentals.

At the public hearing on the proposal March 7, several people expressed concerns about “hollowing out” of the year-round community here with conversion of many housing units to vacation rentals.

During their work on the budget, the Warrant Committee voted to recommend increased town fees for vacation rentals and more frequent inspections of those properties.

The Town Council did not take any action on those recommendations at their meeting with the Warrant Committee this week.
