BAR HARBOR — Mount Desert Island Hospital was one of only 251 hospitals nationally to receive a five-star rating under Medicare’s new star rating system, hospital officials announced this week.
The new system, based on patient evaluation, aims to provide more transparency to healthcare consumers by allowing them to more easily compare hospitals using a five-star scale, with more stars indicating better quality care.
Based on 11 areas of patient experience, the rating system includes measures such as willingness to recommend, provider communication, responsiveness of care and pain management. Medicare already employs the star rating system in rating for nursing homes, dialysis centers and private Medicare Advantage insurance plans.
Medicare collects patient experience data by surveying a random sample of all hospital patients, not just Medicare patients. Star ratings enable consumers to assess quickly and easily patient experience information provided on Medicare’s Hospital Compare website at www.medicare.gov/hospitalcompare.
