Hodgdon guilty in sexual assault case

Benjamin Hodgdon has been found guilty of gross sexual assault and other charges

ELLSWORTH – A former Tremont Consolidated School teacher accused of sexually assaulting a female student was found guilty on three charges in Hancock County Unified Criminal Court Wednesday afternoon.

Benjamin Hodgdon II of Tremont has been charged with four counts of gross sexual assault, two counts of unlawful sexual contact and two counts of sexual abuse of a minor for his alleged molestation of a female student. The abuse reportedly began when the girl was 12 and he was 35 years old. Hodgdon was indicted on the charges in April 2014.

On Wednesday the jury deliberated for about five and half hours before finding Hodgdon, 48, guilty on one count of gross sexual assault, one count of unlawful sexual contact, and one count of sexual abuse of a minor.

No date has been set for sentencing.

The conviction for class A gross sexual assault is punishable by up to 30 years in prison and up to a $50,000 fine.

Hodgdon will also be required to be listed on the state’s sex offender registry for at least ten years.
