Mason Gurtler earns Eagle Scout rank

BAR HARBOR — Mason Gurtler, a junior at Mount Desert Island High School, has achieved the Boy Scout’s highest rank, that of Eagle Scout. Only four percent of scouts reach that rank.

To earn the honor, Gurtler had to demonstrate leadership in the troop and in the community, as well as earn 21 merit badges. For his Eagle project, he planned for and supervised the construction of a storage closet for the drama department at the high school.

The Bar Harbor Town Council passed a resolution noting Gurtler’s accomplishment, as did the Maine Legislature. He also received a congratulatory letter from U.S. Sen. Angus King.

Gurtler is the son of Mike and Michelle Gurtler of Bar Harbor.
