Grants available to support community, collaboration

ELLSWORTH — Nonprofit and public organizations seeking funding for projects that draw on the strengths of the community and foster collaboration are encouraged to apply to the Hancock County Fund, part of the Maine Community Foundation’s Community Building Grant Program.

In 2014, grants totaling nearly $117,000 were awarded to 33 nonprofits. They included $8,000 to Maine Coast Regional Health Facilities to create and implement an oral health program through the MCMH dental clinic that focuses on senior citizens in Hancock and Washington counties; $5,000 to Opera House Arts to support the Bridge Project/The Last Ferryman, a new performance work and community project; and $7,500 to Friends in Action to support nutrition and wellness programs at the former Moore School facility in Ellsworth.

A volunteer committee of Hancock County residents and business leaders reviews grants and makes recommendations for funding. The deadline for applying is Feb. 15. Application and guidelines are available at
