Gilbert Farm land conserved

BAR HARBOR — A major agricultural property here will become a working farm again and will remain free of residential development in perpetuity.

The 68-acre Gilbert Farm, on Gilbert Farm Road in Town Hill, is now under the ownership of Bar Harbor Community Farm. Maine Coast Heritage Trust (MCHT) now holds a conservation easement on 48 acres of the property, with another 10 acres set aside for future sale to Acadia National Park.

The Community Farm has for the past four years operated out of a leased field on Norway Drive. Owner Glennon Friedmann said Tuesday that she has always wanted to expand, and this land purchase, and the help from MCHT, will allow her to do so.
