Fourth crowds set records

BAR HARBOR — Those who suspect downtown has never been more crowded for the Fourth of July holiday than it was this year now have some numbers to back that up.

The Bar Harbor/MDI Rotary Club’s 44th Annual Fourth of July Pancake Breakfast and Seafood Festival broke its own record, raising over $37,000. The net profit will be given back to the community through support of scholarships and nonprofit organizations.

The 70 club members sold more than 450 lobsters to tourists and residents. Demand was so high that eventually the operations had to shut down as supplies of food and other items were exhausted.

Rotary also coordinates nonprofit groups on the Bar Harbor athletic field. Those groups typically raise approximately $50,000 for their causes. This year, Bar Harbor Rotarians were assisted by the volunteer efforts of Mount Desert Island Hospital staff and Boy Scout Troop 89.

Also, all-time sales records were set on either Friday or Saturday by several long-running downtown businesses, including Side Street Café and Epi.

The Rotary Club of Bar Harbor and MDI recently supported cancer services at the MDI YMCA and MDI Hospital, sent hundreds of wheelchairs to Panama, supported the new Bar Harbor Kids Book Festival and gave out charitable contributions and scholarships to local high school students and the Golden Apple Award to an outstanding teacher in the area.
