Forum on citizens’ initiatives

BAR HARBOR — A presentation on two citizens’ initiatives on the ballot at the upcoming June 11 town election is planned for Wednesday, May 22, at 7 p.m. at the Jesup Memorial Library.

The first petition, Article 4, seeks to make residency a requirement for voting on town boards. Boards, committees and task forces are all appointed by the council. Some have designated seats for people who have important perspectives on the work of the board, such as harbormaster and police chief, some of whom are not town residents.

The second petition, Article 5, is a proposed zoning change to prohibit berthing piers for large cruise ships. The definition of large in the petition was “more than five hundred passengers.”

Resident Charles Sidman, who let the citizens’ initiative effort, will discuss the two proposals.

Following the presentation of each article there will be a panel discussion with members of the Planning Board, Warrant Committee, Cruise Ship Committee and the Communications and Technology Task Force.

There will also be time for questions from the audience.
