BAR HARBOR — Ted Widmer, former advisor to both Bill and Hillary Clinton, will join College of the Atlantic Professor Jamie McKown in a discussion of contemporary American politics at COA’s Coffee and Conversation salon in the Deering Common Community Center on Tuesday, Aug. 16, at 9 a.m. The event is free and open to the public.
“I’ve loved history and politics since I was a kid, and was lucky to see a presidency up close when I worked in the Clinton White House from 1997 to 2001,” Widmer said. “While much feels familiar in 2016 … the political landscape is changing rapidly, with new tools, new strategies and a volatile electorate that does not especially want pundits, politicians or historians telling them what to think.”
Widmer is a senior fellow at American Progress and the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs. He is a historian based at Brown University and writes frequently for The New York Times and The Boston Globe, where he is a monthly columnist. He has served in government twice, as a speechwriter and senior advisor to former President Bill Clinton from 1997-2001 and as a senior advisor to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton from 2012-2013.
McKown is the COA James Russell Wiggins Chair in Government and Polity.
