BAR HARBOR — Former long-time Fire Chief David Rand passed away Aug. 20 after a long battle with cancer.

Chief Rand led the department here from November 1993 until June 2012. He was assistant fire chief in Bangor before coming to Bar Harbor, also serving time as the chief of the Lincoln fire department.

“Chief Rand had a great personality, and he left a very bright, positive legacy behind at the Bar Harbor Fire Department,” current Fire Chief Matt Bartlett said Thursday.

Chief Bartlett was hired by Chief Rand in 1995 and has been with the department since. Chief Rand served as an excellent mentor and passed down many examples of quality leadership that Chief Bartlett works daily to emulate, he said.

“He looked out for all of us, he helped us, and he had our backs,” Chief Bartlett said. “He was all Bar Harbor Fire.”

Chief Rand leaves behind his wife Karen, daughter Joi, son Judson and several grandchildren.

Service information will be announced at a later time.
