Fish stink cancels school at MDI High

BAR HARBOR — There was nothing fishy about the robo-calls that went out early Friday to notify faculty and students at Mount Desert Island High School that school had been cancelled for the day due to vandalism.

Someone entered the building during the overnight and spread the stinky oil from lobster bait throughout some of the hallways.

Maintenance workers at the school were called in around 2:30 a.m. to begin cleaning up the mess. By 8, they had most of the mess cleaned up and the school smelling reasonably fresh.

Bar Harbor police are investigating the vandalism. As of 9 a.m. they had not returned a call seeking more information.

According to a janitor at the school, another janitor was on duty around 1 a.m. and heard some noises in another section of the building. When she flipped on lights in that area the person or persons ran out of the building. However, fish oil had already been spread in some of the first-floor hallways, some of which damaged a carpet in the school library.

Friday was the last day of classes for seniors, leaving school officials to ponder whether the incident was a senior prank or simply a malicious act.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
