Fireworks ordinance eyed

TREMONT—Selectmen tasked Town Manager Chris Saunders on Monday with drafting a fireworks ordinance for the town.

Fire Chief Keith Higgins told selectmen he fields a lot of calls from residents complaining about fireworks. Complaints mostly stem from scared pets and loud noises going late into the night. Some residents seem to set them off almost every night, he said.

One resident reported waking up to his mulch pile on fire due to an errant firework.

Selectmen said they didn’t want to see fireworks banned completely. They suggested requiring permits for those looking to celebrate outside of specific holidays, but agreed that would be difficult to enforce.

Tremont is the only town on Mount Desert Island that allows the use of consumer fireworks.
