Fire spreads over 5 acres in Trenton

TRENTONFirefighters from across Hancock County responded to a brush fire that broke out this afternoon in a wooded area near Goose Cove Road.

“Right now the fire is spread over about five acres,” said Steve Heckman, Trenton deputy fire chief. “It’s in an area only accessible by ATV trails.”

Heckman added that the area is normally damp and marshy.

Fire crews from Trenton, Ellsworth, Lamoine, Hancock, Franklin, and as far away as Bar Harbor were on hand to respond to the fire.

Will Rich of Trenton called the Fire Department around 4 p.m. when he noticed smoke nearby his property.

“I was just about to leave and I noticed a lot of smoke in the air,” Rich said as fire crews on ATVs headed into the woods behind his property. “I went down towards my neighbor’s house and didn’t see as much there, so I knew it was close by.”

While the fire was spread out over several acres, Heckman said no properties were currently threatened by the fire.
