Fire damages Tremont rock crusher

TREMONT – A leaking hydraulic hose most likely is the source of a Wednesday afternoon fire that caused hundreds of thousands of dollars damage to rock-crushing machinery owned by Doug Gott and Sons Construction, according to Tremont fire chief Keith Higgins.

The fire was reported shortly after 1 p.m. The machine was in operation and employees tried to extinguish the flames with fire extinguishers but to no avail, Higgins said.

The rock crushing machine is located in a gravel pit owned by the company in the village of Bass Harbor. Arriving at the scene, Tremont firefighters called for assistance from the Southwest Harbor Fire Department. The fire was reported to be under control around 1:45 p.m., according to a dispatcher with the Southwest Harbor Police Department.

Due to the nature of the blaze, firefighters had to use an inordinate amount of water to douse the flames and cool metal on the crusher, Higgins said.

The rock crusher has been an issue in the town, with some neighboring property owners complaining about the noise.
