Fire chief resigns

SOUTHWEST HARBOR — Selectmen here accepted the resignation of Fire Chief Jack Martel at their meeting on Tuesday.

Martel sent a letter to Board of Selectmen Chair Dan Norwood last week asking the resignation be effective immediately. Deputy Chief Tom Chisholm will fill the role of acting chief until a vote goes before the Fire Department on June 21 to appoint someone permanently.

Martel joined the department in 1976 and became deputy chief in 1983. He served the town in that position until the end of 2015. Martel began the year 2016 as the fire chief and remained in that role until his resignation last week.

Members of the board expressed their gratitude for Martel’s service to the town. Conversation continued between selectmen and outgoing Town Manager Don Lagrange regarding the possibility of paying volunteers in the future for time lost from their employment when responding to emergencies.
