Stay away from giant hogweed

BAR HARBOR — Town officials are warning users of Hadley Point beach to stay away from a plant known as “giant hogweed” (Heracleum mantegazzianum) in the area. The sap of the plant can cause serious skin inflammations and, if contact is made with the eyes, can cause blindness.

A contractor has been hired to apply herbicide which will take a number of applications and weeks to hopefully eliminate the plants, which are considered invasive species. The areas being treated are marked off.

“Hopefully in the next three to six weeks, we will be able to report it has been eliminated,” Public Works Director Chip Reeves said in a statement. Contact Public Works at 288-4681.
