SWANS ISLAND — By a vote of 265-29, electricity customers on Swans Island and Frenchboro have approved the takeover of the Swans Island Electric Cooperative (SIEC) by Emera Maine.
March 15 was the deadline for sending in ballots.
The Maine Public Utilities Commission (PUC) last month approved the terms of the merger, which the two parties negotiated after the PUC turned down their original deal in January.
As Emera customers, residents of the two islands will pay significantly less for electricity, especially in the long run. But for the next five years, a surcharge of about $19.30 will be added to the monthly bill per meter to offset Emera’s costs associated with acquiring the SIEC.
