BAR HARBOR — The YWCA of Mount Desert Island awarded scholarship grants to three graduating seniors from MDI High School on June 12. The Paulette Baker Paluga Scholarship was given to Sydney Wright; The Lorin Cooper Scholarship was given to Joni Mangarella; and The YWCA MDI Academic Scholarship was given to Mia Strout. The board of directors is pleased to announce that this year’s awards were increased to $2,000.
The board also is pleased to announce the formation of a new scholarship fund to honor the memory of a longtime employee, Ruth I. Hodgkins. The Ruth Hodgkins Scholarship has been created to be a resource for women pursuing a non-traditional course of study, offering financial assistance to women whose goals may not include a college degree.
Applications will be accepted throughout the year and may be picked up at the YWCA on Mount Desert Street or by visiting www.ywcamdi.org. Each application will be considered individually on a needs basis by the board’s scholarship committee.
Ruth Hodgkins was a working woman all of her life, holding various positions in Massachusetts and Maine, from clerical and bookkeeping, to traffic manager at WDEA Radio in Ellsworth. She ended her career as a secretary, then administrativeaAssistant at the YWCA MDI. Hodgkins cared deeply for people and was very fond of her co-workers and the residents at the YWCA. Members of the board believe that a fund that will provide educational opportunities for local women and girls is a fitting way to remember Hodgkins.
