BAR HARBOR — The Conners Emerson School robotics team, “Oh Boy…These Pickles are Natural Disasters,” took home top awards at The World Festival robotics competition in St. Louis, Mo., on Saturday.
The Pickles came in third place in Robot Performance, highest among the teams from the United States, and first place in Robot Strategy and Innovation. The team competed over the course of four days against 80 of the best robotics groups from around the world, including teams from Japan, China and Germany.
The competition is the highest profile competition for the First Lego League (FLL), a robotics program for 9- to 16-year-olds (9 to 14 in the United States, Canada and Mexico) that currently includes over 20,000 teams from around the world.
The team worked six to seven days a week from September through April, compiling around 180 practices and a combined 1,600 hours of work from the eight team members. Many team parents took shifts to provide coverage after school and weekends.
Team sponsors include the August A. Busch III Charitable Trust, The Jackson Laboratory, AMC Technology, LLC, the Bar Harbor School Department, Machias Savings Bank, Siren Marine, Bar Harbor Savings and Loan, and Bar Harbor Bank & Trust.
