National Merit semifinalist



BAR HARBOR — William Miller of Bar Harbor, a senior at Mount Desert Island High School, has been named a 2016 National Merit Scholarship semifinalist.

About 1.5 million students nationwide entered the 2016 competition. Miller is one of about 16,000 semifinalists, including 76 in Maine. Typically, about 90 semifinalists become finalists, and half of those win scholarships.

Semifinalists are the students in each state who score the highest on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

Miller is the son of Terese and Mark Miller.
