John Atkinson of Atkinson Builders takes apart the old theater stage at Mount Desert Island High School in preparation for constructing a new one this summer.

BAR HARBOR — The theater stage at Mount Desert Island High School is being rebuilt in honor of an alum who died unexpectedly just over three years ago.

The $60,000 project commenced Monday as a crew with Atkinson Builders began tearing off old floorboards and carting them away. Construction is expected to last four to six weeks, and will include new wiring, storage areas and other theatrical components.

The project is in memory of Ashleigh Littlefield, a 2009 MDIHS graduate who died from a sudden medical issue in 2010 at the age of 19.
