Four vie for school seats

MOUNT DESERT — Four candidates are running for two seats on the Mount Desert School Committee in the May 2 election.

There are two candidates for two seats on the Board of Selectmen.

School Committee members John Brown and Teresa King-Leclair have filed for re-election. They are joined in the race by Todd Graham and Travis Jones. The winners will serve three-year terms.

Members of the School Committee, which sets policies and budgets for Mount Desert Elementary School, also serve on the Mount Desert Island Regional School System board and the MDI High School board.

Two of Mount Desert’s three seats on the high school’s Board of Trustees are up for election, but no one has filed to run. One seat is currently vacant. Incumbent Barry Stratton is not seeking another term. The high school trustees are responsible for the school’s buildings and grounds.

As for the Board of Selectmen, incumbent Matt Hart has filed for re-election to a three-year term. Also running is Brian Riley, a former member of the School Committee. Incumbent Selectman Tom Richardson is not seeking another term.

Friday, March 18, was the deadline for filing nomination papers with the town clerk.

The May 2 election will be followed by the annual open-floor town meeting on May 3.
