BAR HARBOR — A Memorandum of Understanding between the Police Department and School Department here for a police officer to continue to serve as a full-time school resource officer (SRO) was unanimously approved by councilors Tuesday.
“We intend for our SRO to add value to the student’s school experience while helping us to build strong relationships within our community,” Police Chief Jim Willis wrote in a memo to the town manager and council.
For four years, Officer Timothy Bland has been the SRO at Connors-Emerson school during the school year and had other police duties in the summer months. He said during a typical day, he counsels students and families, talks with students at recess and lunch and teaches some classroom material on law enforcement-related topics. “It varies widely, just like law enforcement does,” he said.
