Community School to show new campus

MOUNT DESERT — The Community School of MDI will host an open house at their new campus at 585 Sound Drive in Somesville on Friday, Sept. 30, from 4-6 p.m. All are welcome. Refreshments will be served. Tours will be offered.

The Community School is a K-5 grade progressive, independent school started in 2014. It fosters a sense of place, sense of self and a love for learning in children so that they may live meaningful lives with a deep understanding and stewardship for our community and our world.

“We are so excited that our school has such a beautiful location, and we are incredibly thankful to our donors, families and builders who have helped to make the historic Babson House our home. This truly was a community effort, ” said Jasmine Smith, school director.

The Babson House was built in 1850 by Eben and Phebe Babson. Its woods, fields, creek and proximity to Somesville make it the perfect location for the school’s place-based approach to education.

The Community School spent its first two years in the Abby Chapel of Seal Harbor. They raised over $850,000 to purchase the new property in Somesville and bring the building up to code.

The Community School nurtures, challenges and empowers children by using the local community and natural world as a classroom to creatively explore all subject areas through a holistic, experiential curriculum. Call Smith at 276-8149 or visit
