BAR HARBOR — A new assistant principal is set to begin at Conners Emerson School in the fall, following a unanimous vote of the school committee Tuesday.
Gloria Delsandro, teacher, team leader and past principal of the Vinalhaven School, takes over the position from Mike Zboray, who leaves this year to become principal of Trenton Elementary School. School committee members backed Delsandro’s appointment by a vote of 5-0, following the recommendation of Principal Barb Neilly and nomination from MDI RSS District Superintendent Howard Colter.
Delsandro brings more than 15 years of educational experience to the job. She has been with The Vinalhaven School since 2002. For seven years, Delsandro taught grades four and five. In 2006, she began studying for a master’s degree in educational leadership at the University of Maine, and in 2009 became The Vinalhaven School “Leader,” the term used to describe the principal there.
Neilly reported Tuesday that she had received 26 applications for the assistant principal job and that six interviews had been completed.
A total of $80,627 is budgeted for the assistant principal’s salary. Recommendations include starting Delsandro at $74,000 annually.
School committee members engaged in little discussion before choosing to support Colter’s nomination. The five-member committee has two new faces after elections earlier this month. The committee now includes returning members Kristi Losquadro, Chris James and Melisa Rowland, and new members Ron Wrobel and Robin Sue Tapley.
